LAND ACQUISITION

Providence Water utilizes several techniques to protect the Scituate Reservoir. One of these approaches is to purchase property from landowners within the Scituate Reservoir watershed.

Providence Water has bought approximately 60 parcels of land totaling nearly 3,000 acres over the past 20 years. Some properties become the sole ownership of Providence Water. Other acquisitions involve only the "development rights" or a "conservation easement". Other types of acquisitions exist, and Providence Water is open to accommodating a diversity of landowners' special conditions or needs. These special conditions or needs are negotiated among the two parties until both are satisfied with the final product.

Occasionally Providence Water will "partner" with another conservation organization. By jointly funding a land purchase, cooperating agencies are able to stretch their dollars, while at the same time achieving their goals.
