Free public field tours are offered during different seasons of the year. These walking tours visit project sites on different parts of the property and are designed to give people a better understanding of forestry and land management issues.

SCITUATE RESERVOIR WATERSHED PUBLIC FIELD TOUR
SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2017
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Providence Water will be hosting a spring walk in the Ashland area of the watershed forest property.

This walk will provide an opportunity to tour one of Providence Water's largest blocks of forestland and see and discuss recent activities that have taken place here. Passing through stands of different tree species, our route will lead us near the Scituate Reservoir shoreline to visit a large wetland created by beavers and now home to many kinds of wildlife. We will likely be able to see the effects of forest insects including the gypsy moth and will talk about strategies for managing these pests in different settings. Along the way, we will discuss the history and past land use of the area and visit sites where we can compare and contrast the results of timber harvest treatments that were carried out between 2013 and 2016.

Reservations are required to join the field tour and can be made by registering online or by calling Forest Supervisor Christopher Riely at (401) 521-6300 x 7313. An email address or phone number for each participant or group is required in case it is necessary to contact registrants with additional information regarding the event. Both adults and children are welcome, but no pets please. The length of the walk is approximately 3 miles over rolling terrain and participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for being outdoors.

We will meet at 9:00 AM inside a gated entrance to Providence Water land on the south side of Route 14 (Plainfield Pike) in Scituate located 0.8 mile west of the Route 14/Route 116 intersection and 0.3 mile east of the reservoir causeway (GPS coordinates: 41.784600, -71.592300). PWSB staff will direct participants to a parking location. In case of heavy rain, the field tour will be postponed to the same time the next day, Sunday, May 21. Registrants will be notified if the event is postponed with an email or phone call by 4 PM on Friday, May 19.

Providence Water's lands near the Scituate Reservoir are closed to unauthorized access for water quality protection and security reasons.
